Heritage Hotel Cardo
Heritage Hotel Cardo earned its spot on our list the moment we traced its address...
Piazza Heritage Hotel sits at Kraj Svete Marije 1, inside the UNESCO-protected core of Split's Old Town, roughly two minutes on foot from the Riva waterfront and the Peristyle. Across four floors and sixteen rooms, the building has been fitted with double-glazed, soundproofed windows, a detail that matters more here than almost anywhere else in Split, where the busiest nightlife streets in the Old Town sit just outside the door.
We picked Piazza Heritage for doing the unglamorous things well. A heritage address in the thick of the Old Town usually trades atmosphere for noise and thin walls; this one keeps the location and fixes the walls instead, with blackout drapes, premium bedding and air conditioning as standard across all eight room categories. It is a less theatrical pick than a palace-wall address, and a more livable one for anyone actually trying to sleep through a Split summer night.
Few addresses in Split pack in landmarks the way this one does: the Cathedral of St Domnius, the Gregory of Nin statue, the old Fish Market and Diocletian's Palace itself are all within about two minutes on foot, with the Riva promenade just as close. Split's train station is a nine-minute walk, and the port and Bačvice beach are each about fifteen minutes away, which keeps the hotel usable as a base for day trips as well as a pure Old Town stay.

Room categories run from Studio through Superior, Deluxe and Luxury, sized between roughly 20 and 35 square metres, with king, twin or queen bed configurations sleeping two to four guests. A handful of Deluxe rooms add a balcony with a city view, but the real consistency is underneath the categories: soundproofing, blackout drapes and a minibar come standard across every tier, rather than being reserved for the top rooms as is common elsewhere.
The ground-floor restaurant and coffee shop run on locally sourced ingredients, with vegan and vegetarian guests catered for properly rather than as an exception, and a bar and garden give the hotel somewhere to sit outside its own four walls. Bicycles are available for guests who want to get beyond the Old Town's pedestrian core, a useful option in a city whose real geography, the Marjan peninsula, Bačvice beach, the harbour, rewards a bit more range than walking alone allows.
Valet parking runs at a daily charge, standard for any Old Town hotel with no street access for cars, and an airport shuttle is available for a surcharge for the roughly thirty-five-minute run to Split Airport. Pets are not accepted, which rules the hotel out for travellers bringing animals along. For everyone else, this is one of the more reliable bookings in the Old Town precisely because it does not try to be the most dramatic one.
