Heritage Hotel Cardo
Heritage Hotel Cardo earned its spot on our list the moment we traced its address...
Murum Heritage Hotel takes its name from the Latin for wall, and the name is literal: a dominant interior wall dating to the Roman Empire, part of the fabric of Diocletian's Palace, has been renewed and built directly into the hotel's design rather than hidden behind plaster. Around it, the interiors run minimalist and contemporary, a deliberate contrast that lets the one ancient feature read as a statement rather than wallpaper, and gives the whole hotel a calmer, more gallery-like feel than its heritage-styled neighbours.
We were sensitive to how disciplined the design is here: most hotels built into Palace walls lean into wall-to-wall heritage styling, antique furniture, exposed stone throughout. Murum does the opposite, stripping the rest of the interior back to a clean, modern register so that the single Roman wall carries all the historical weight. It is a more editorial, more considered way to sit inside a UNESCO monument than simply decorating around it, and it reads as confident rather than minimal for its own sake.
The hotel sits on Poljana Grgura Ninskog, inside the Palace walls and a few steps from the Peristyle, in the same immediate cluster of Old Town addresses that put the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, the Pazar market and the Riva waterfront within a few minutes on foot. The square itself is quiet relative to the main Palace thoroughfares, giving the hotel a slightly calmer footing than addresses directly on the busiest alleys while keeping the same walking distances to everything that matters, cruise-ship crowds included.

Room categories move from a compact Standard Double or Twin up through a Deluxe Double with an Old Town view, a larger Superior Double or Twin, a room with a terrace and landmark view, and a King Suite for up to four guests. Every category keeps the same essentials, private bathroom, air conditioning, free WiFi, an LCD TV, and the view is really the differentiator between tiers rather than a jump in style or amenity. The terrace room and the King Suite are the two worth booking ahead, since landmark views in a five-room-type hotel this size sell out first.
There is no restaurant beyond the first-floor breakfast buffet, served between 8 and 11 each morning with optional extras available, which keeps the hotel's offer deliberately narrow: a design-led room, a dependable breakfast, and the rest of the Old Town a short walk away for lunch and dinner. Daily housekeeping and same-day laundry cover the practical side of a short stay without the hotel trying to be a full-service resort inside a historic shell.
As with any address inside the Palace walls, there is no on-site parking and no vehicle access; cars stay outside the Old Town entirely. The hotel's narrower service offer, breakfast only, no restaurant or bar, suits a short city stay built around eating out in Split rather than a traveller looking to stay in for dinner. The calmer position on Poljana Grgura Ninskog is worth it for travellers who still want the full run of the Old Town within a five-minute walk, and who would rather spend an evening at a wine bar on the Riva than at the hotel itself.
