Hotel Capital
★★★★
A 1920s Bank Turned Art Deco Hotel
Hotel Capital occupies a 1923 building designed by Gotthilf & Neumann for the Wiener Bank-Verein, one of the grand commercial banks of interwar Zagreb. The restoration kept the Art Deco bones intact rather than smoothing them over: ornate ceilings, period chandeliers and, most notably, the original vault doors, now swung open onto hospitality rather than onto a strongroom. The hotel is a member of Historic Hotels of Europe, a status that tracks with how little of the building's original character has been sacrificed for modern comfort.
Why It Works
We chose Hotel Capital because it treats its banking past as the actual design brief rather than as a marketing line. The vault doors do real work, closing off the Capital Private Club rather than sitting decoratively in a corridor, and the gilded ceilings carry through into the restaurant rather than stopping at reception. For a capital-city hotel aimed at a Luxe audience, that kind of follow-through, architecture doing double duty as atmosphere, is rarer than the Art Deco label alone would suggest.
Why This Location
The hotel sits in central Zagreb with Zagreb Cathedral visible from the building, putting Ban Jelačić Square, the funicular up to the Upper Town, and the Gradec and Kaptol districts within easy walking range. Lenuci's Horseshoe of parks threads through the Lower Town nearby, and Maksimir Park and Medvednica Nature Park are both reachable for a half-day out of the centre. It is a location built for exploring Zagreb on foot by day and returning to a private, monitored garage with valet parking by night.

Rooms Under Gilded Ceilings
Room categories run from compact Standard Atrium View rooms through Superior rooms facing either the atrium or the city, with a City View option adding a balcony, up to Deluxe City View rooms at the top of the range. Every category keeps the Art Deco detailing, bright interiors and king-size beds as the baseline, with a pillow menu available on request. The Family Room adds space for a third guest, aimed at travellers combining a Zagreb city break with family in tow rather than at a resort-style family stay.
Dining Behind the Old Vault Doors
Restaurant Momentum runs breakfast through to à la carte lunches and Croatian fine dining in the former banking hall, with wines served by Coravin to keep bottles in condition between pours. Bela Café handles the daytime register, known locally for its cakes, chocolate torte and a Sacher torte among them, and the Capital Private Club keeps the original vault doors as its literal entrance, hosting fine wine and spirits tastings and small private events rather than opening as a public bar.
Before You Book
The hotel's Capital Business Salon, with theatre-style seating for forty, makes this as much a business and meetings address as a leisure one, so a pure city-break booking should confirm the calendar isn't carrying a conference during the stay. Parking in central Zagreb is otherwise difficult, which makes the hotel's private monitored garage and valet service worth booking ahead for anyone arriving by car. The location rewards a stay built around walking the Upper and Lower Town rather than day-tripping by car.
